This is the moment a street performer’s flame-throwing jetpack act goes horrifically wrong when fire spreads to his helmet and neck before engulfing almost his entire head.

The incident happened at the Happiness Bay Vitality Coast project in Yantai, in China’s eastern Shandong Province, on 31st May.

The 17-second clip begins with the performer standing in front of onlookers while wearing a backpack-style fire device that shoots vertical jets of flame out around him.

The flames create what looks like a peacock tail made of fire as the entertainer stands at what appears to be a safe distance from the crowd.

But after he switches off the display, fire can be seen still burning at the top of the backpack and around the helmet he is wearing.

The performer quickly rips off the helmet and throws it away before realising flames are still burning on his neck.

He can then be seen desperately beating at the fire with his hands as he tries to put it out.

But when he dumps the backpack on the ground, flames suddenly shoot out across the floor, forcing a young woman who had been running towards him to help to turn and flee back from the blaze.

Meanwhile, the fire around the performer’s neck appears to grow worse and begins to engulf almost his entire head as he continues trying to beat it out.

The performer then runs away from the burning equipment.

Project staff said the accident happened during the final day of the performance event.

Workers at the coastal attraction said strong winds had unexpectedly changed the direction of the flames during the act, according to local reports.

The performer was taken to hospital after suffering burns to his neck.

Staff later said his injuries were not serious and that he was otherwise unharmed.

Officials from the local Xingfu Street office confirmed they had intervened following the incident.

Local reports also said safety inspections and rectification work had been launched for outdoor performances at the venue after the accident.
