This footage shows police showcasing a huge security operation that will see more than 15,000 officers deployed during the visit of Pope Leo XIV to Spain with the authorities saying it is the largest in their history.

The footage was obtained from the Spanish National Police on 3rd June and relates to security preparations for the Pope's visit to Madrid, Barcelona and the Canary Islands.

The video shows officers, vehicles, helicopters and specialist units involved in the operation.

The Spanish authorities said that the deployment is the largest logistical challenge faced by the National Police in more than two centuries of its history.

The Pope is due to arrive in Madrid on Saturday before travelling on to Barcelona, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Tenerife for a series of public events, according to reports.

Reports said 9,700 officers will be assigned in Madrid, while 600 will be deployed in Barcelona, 1,200 in Las Palmas and 1,000 in Tenerife.

According to reports, a further 2,600 trainee officers from the National Police School in Avila will support the operation.

The Pope's close protection team will include specialists from the Central Protection Unit and officers from the Special Operations Group, known as GEO, according to reports.

The operation will involve almost 600 vehicles, including 250 public order vans, 17 mounted police trucks and 24 canine unit vehicles, alongside an aircraft, seven helicopters and 16 police drones, the authorities said.

Command centres will reportedly coordinate security, intelligence, aerial surveillance and cyber threat monitoring throughout the visit, while unauthorised drone flights will be banned in affected areas.
