A mother hugged and kissed her one-year-old daughter in a desperate bid to comfort her shortly before they died in each other’s arms after being shot by the child’s Army sergeant father, who then took his own life.
The killings happened in Santos, a coastal city in the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo, in the early hours of 10th August, which was Father's Day in Brazil.
Police said the victims were identified as Gabrielly Simoes Silva, 21, and her daughter, Jade Caroline Simoes Martins.
The killer was named as 3rd Sergeant Pedro Henrique Martins dos Santos, 24.
Officers called to the home at around 4am found Gabrielly lying face-down on the bed holding Jade in her arms.
Both had gunshot wounds and were covered in blood.
Describing the gruesome scene, Police Chief Joao Octavio de Melo said: "It appears that the mother was protecting and kissing her daughter before they were shot."
At the home, police also discovered Martins dos Santos sitting lifeless on the bed, leaning against the wall with his head tilted to one side.
A firearm was discovered on the floor near his body and the walls of the bedroom were covered in blood spatter, according to the police report.
The Sao Paulo Public Security Secretariat said the pistol had been seized and sent for forensic analysis along with crime scene examinations to determine the cause and dynamics of the deaths.
They confirmed the case was registered as femicide followed by suicide and is being investigated by Santos’ Central Judicial Police Station.
The Brazilian Army’s Southeast Military Command said it regretted the deaths and confirmed the investigation was under the jurisdiction of the police as it was not a military crime.
Police records show Gabrielly had previously reported her husband in 2023 for bodily harm and threats in a domestic violence case.
