This is the moment a judge steps in to save a choking lawyer by using the Heimlich manoeuvre during a live streamed court hearing.
The incident took place at the Regional Labour Court (TRT-BA) in Salvador, in the Brazilian state of Bahia, late in the morning on Tuesday, 5th August.
Footage from the courtroom shows the lawyer seated near the door as he suddenly begins choking, raising his hand to indicate distress.
One person offers him a glass of water, but the man is unable to speak or breathe properly.
Judge Danilo Goncalves Gaspar then walks over, asks the lawyer if he is still choking, and stands behind him to deliver two quick, forceful abdominal thrusts using the Heimlich technique.
The manoeuvre dislodges the obstruction, and the lawyer is seen shaking hands with the judge afterwards and saying he feels better.
People in the courtroom appear visibly concerned during the incident, but the mood quickly relaxes after the successful rescue.
Judge Goncalves later said: "We learn these things, but I never imagined I'd have to put them into practice. That's what we’re here for."
The Heimlich method is a first aid procedure used to treat upper airway obstruction caused by foreign objects, typically food, and is only advised when the person cannot speak or cough forcefully.
