This is the moment police officers wade into floodwater hidden beneath a thick layer of hail to rescue a woman from her rapidly flooding car.

The footage was obtained from the Aurora Police Department (APD) in the city of Aurora, in the American state of Colorado, on 2nd June and shows the incident on 1st June.

The video shows what appears to be a harmless mound of hail near East Sixth Avenue and Sable Boulevard concealing thigh-high water beneath.

Water surges into the vehicle as officers force the door open, leaving the seat almost completely submerged.

One of the officers then carries the woman to safety as the footage ends.

The downpour came after a hailstorm swept across parts of Aurora, with stones measuring up to 3.2 centimetres (1.25 inches) recorded by the National Weather Service (NWS).

Jackie Levell, who watched the storm from the Gateway Park area, said: "The heavens opened up, and here comes the hail.

"It must have lasted just under 10 minutes.

"I couldn't believe what a steady flow."

Aurora resident Tom Schasane said: "This is the most hail I've seen in 16 or 17 years here.
"It looked like snow."

The APD said in a statement: "Anything can change in an instant.

"Yesterday's hail storm and flash flooding created some dangerous conditions across our city.

"For one woman, a routine drive to work quickly turned into an emergency when she unknowingly drove into floodwaters near 6th and Sable.

"Thankfully, we were nearby, ready to help.

"Officers safely rescued the driver, ensured she was unharmed, and even gave her a ride home.

"Moments like these are a reminder that floodwaters can be unpredictable and dangerous.

"If you encounter water covering a roadway, turn around and find an alternate route.

"Aurora, we're here for you when the unexpected happens.

"Keeping our community safe is and always will be our top priority."
