A jobless bum has been arrested for strangling his ex-girlfriend to death using a roll of clingfilm when he went to her home and tried to reconcile but she refused.

Mum-of-three Assunta Sgarbini, 47, known to most as Tina, was found dead in her first-floor apartment in Montecorvino Rovella, Italy, on the morning of 23rd August.

The mum of three had allegedly been killed by her ex, 36-year-old Christian Persico, after she decided to end their nine-year relationship.

Investigators believe Persico had tried to repair the relationship and convince his former partner to take him back, but when she refused, the argument escalated and quickly turned into violence.

During the confrontation, he overpowered her and suffocated her with plastic wrap, according to investigators, leaving her dead inside the apartment.

Police who later examined the scene of the crime reported clear signs of a struggle and also found traces of blood throughout the home.

After killing her, Persico left the flat and fled the scene, heading straight to his family’s home.

Once there, he wrote a brief note to his mother in which he confessed to what had happened, writing simply the words: "I screwed up", before leaving again.

After finding the note, his family realised what had taken place and they immediately alerted the authorities.

Several hours later, Persico was spotted by a passerby not far from the victim's house and officers moved in to arrest him.

He reportedly offered no resistance when he was taken into custody, and officers noticed that scratches on his face indicated Tina had put up a fight as he suffocated her. However, he refused to explain how he got them or to make any statement about what had happened.

Tina and Persico had first met in 2016 and began a relationship that lasted nine years, but she eventually decided it was over.

According to her family, Tina had thrown him out of her home because he had no steady job and she no longer wanted him to stay, which he refused to accept.

Her father, Antonio Sgarbini, stated: "She kicked him out because he wasn't working; he would show up at the house and sit around doing whatever he wanted.

"At a certain point, my daughter said, 'You have to get out of here.'"

Tina leaves behind three children, aged 24 to 17, from a previous relationship, who were not home at the time of the murder.

Friends described her as a kind, cheerful, and well-liked person.

The town's mayor, Martino D’Onofrio, announced a day of mourning and said: "The pain we feel as a community is immense, because the life of our Tina was cruelly taken within the walls of her home, where everyone should feel safe.

"There are no words sufficient to fill the void left by this tragedy.

"At this moment, our thoughts go to her family, her children, and to all who knew and loved her. Our community will not forget her."

Persico currently remains in custody facing charges of femicide.

An autopsy has confirmed the cause of death was external mechanical asphyxiation.

The investigation is ongoing.
