A widow who had recently undergone cancer therapy was horrified when she returned home to find her priceless collection of Hermes handbags stolen together with expensive watches.

The burglary happened in Bielefeld, in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, and was reported on 20th August.

Images show empty orange boxes scattered across the floor.

Police said the thieves took 38 Hermes bags with a total estimated value of around EUR 1,000,000 (GBP 865,000). They also stole two Rolex watches and a Hermes watch.

The stolen Hermes bags included a white Birkin with palladium fittings and a cognac-coloured Kelly Bag 40 made from Epsom leather.

The victim, identified as 59-year-old Senada B., said: "It feels as if my whole life has gone, as if someone has stolen my soul."

She began collecting Hermes handbags nearly 30 years ago, after her husband - a successful entrepreneur who has since died - gave her the financial freedom to buy them.

She said: "My handbags were my babies. I always used to say: first the bag, then my husband and then my dog."

She explained that the collection, which included 23 Birkin Bags and 15 Kelly Bags, was intended as her retirement security after surviving a recent battle with cancer.

Police are investigating whether two men who were recorded in CCTV footage lurking outside the property last December are connected to the burglary.

Officers are continuing to investigate and have not confirmed how the burglars learned about the handbags.
