Police are investigating viral footage that shows a tourist boat hitting a humpback whale as it breaches while watchers laugh.
Cops have confirmed they are looking into the incident that took place near Praia dos Anjos, in Arraial do Cabo, in the Lakes Region of Rio, in Brazil, on Sunday, 6th July.
The footage shows the large marine animal breaching the surface of the water as it comes up for air, with the boat with tourists on it and with an "Azimute Tour" banner on its side ramming into it.
The images caused outrage after the footage emerged online, with the local authorities confirming they are analysing the images.
The Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) reported that an inspection team from the Arraial do Cabo Marine Extractive Reserve (Resex) and the Federal Police is investigating.
Netizens condemned the actions of the skipper of the boat that hit the whale and felt sorry for the animal, with many saying: "Poor whale."
There are currently no new cases of injured, stranded or dead whales in the region, according to reports, meaning that the large animal may have escaped serious injury.
Between June and September, Arraial do Cabo welcomes thousands of humpback whales to its beaches, also leading to the development of a tourist trade for whale watchers.
