A geologist and university professor has died after she was attacked by a swarm of killer bees while doing research in the field with a group of colleagues.

Andrea Fandino Palacios, 30, passed away just hours after the bee attack in Ortega, Colombia, on 5th August.

The young geology expert who taught at the Faculty of Sciences of the National University in Bogota was conducting fieldwork when the swarm of Africanized bees stung her.

The species, more commonly known as 'killer bees', have become notorious for their particularly aggressive attacks with painful stings that have killed around 1,000 humans.

Andrea was immediately rescued and taken to the local San Jose Hospital.

Her face was severely swollen from multiple bites to her cheeks and mouth, as well as her chest and her extremities.

She suffered a cardiac arrest only hours later, and was pronounced dead that evening.

The Faculty of Sciences of the National University later issued a statement saying: "It is with profound sorrow that we bid farewell to our beloved professor Andrea Fandino Palacios, who dedicated her life with passion to Geology and with love to her students, friends, and family."

Ortega Government Secretary Sergio Ramirez highlighted that due to the dry season and high temperatures, an increased presence of Africanized bees has been recorded in the rural perimeter of the municipality.

The official has issued alerts and recommendations to the community, urging people to move away, remain calm, and remain silent if they encounter a swarm to avoid similar incidents.
