A woman who lured a heavily pregnant mother into her home before stabbing her and cutting the unborn child from her womb has been sentenced to 53 years in prison.
The crime happened in March 2021 in Macae, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, when 22-year-old Priscila Torquato da Silva killed 21-year-old Pamela Ferreira Andrade Martins, who was eight months pregnant.
The sentence was handed down by the Jury Court of Macae on Wednesday, 20th August.
Investigators said Torquato da Silva had lied to family and friends that she was pregnant, and her plan was to steal a baby to pass off as her own.
She attacked Pamela with a knife inside her house, and removed the child from her womb while she was still alive.
Torquato da Silva then took the newborn to a hospital and told medics she had given birth at home. The boy died hours later.
Claiming to feel unwell, she was admitted to another medical facility where doctors confirmed she had not been pregnant. Staff from the first unit had already raised the alarm, and police arrested her.
During questioning, Torquato da Silva admitted the baby was not hers. Police also discovered she had contacted several other expectant women online before befriending Pamela.
Pamela’s mother later told local media: "We found out that she had already made contact with other girls looking for a target. Just that the others did not fall for it.
"My daughter, out of kindness, thinking she was going to have a new friendship, believed in her, and she paid the price for her kindness."
On the day of the crime, Pamela’s sister, Natalia Ferreira, found blood on the floor of the family home.
She told reporters: "She was dragged from the bedroom to the bathroom. The door to the hall was locked, we needed to break it down, but the bathroom door was open.
"I started to scream, my dad came. Then they called the police, then the ambulance arrived."
Pamela was discovered dead on the bathroom floor with her belly ripped open.
Judge Victor Vasconcellos de Mattos, in his ruling, highlighted the devastating impact of the killing on the family.
He said: "The consequences of this barbaric crime are extremely serious. The victim’s father, due to the events and as a result of the depression he developed, attempted suicide on more than one occasion.
"Furthermore, the victim's son, who witnessed her death, still has difficulty communicating and is undergoing psychological and speech therapy treatment."
Pamela's relatives revealed that her husband and then two-year-old son were left traumatised by the attack.
The case file noted that the killing happened in front of the toddler, who is now six and continues to need specialist support.
The Rio de Janeiro Public Prosecutor’s Office described the crime as cruel, motivated by deceit, and committed in a way that prevented the victim from defending herself.
Pamela had been looking forward to the arrival of her second child, her family said.
Her relatives told police that Torquato da Silva had previously said she would "get herself a child whatever it takes."
Pamela’s family later added that they never believed she was capable of such violence until the horrific day she acted on her words.
