This is the viral moment an 82-year-old woman calmly puts out a kitchen fire after a gas explosion erupted in her home.
The incident happened in Zhuji, Shaoxing City, Zhejiang Province, China, on 12th October, and has gone viral after being shared online, notching up over 1.2 million views.
The elderly woman was cooking alone at home when the iquefied gas stove she was using suddenly erupted in a giant fireball as she turned it off.
Surveillance footage shows flames bursting from the cooker, but the pensioner reacts swiftly and without panic.
The unnamed OAP closes a nearby drawer to cut off oxygen to the flames, then covers the burning stove with a pot lid before turning off the gas cylinder valve to extinguish the fire completely.
Her grandson, Mr Wang, later said that his grandmother had indeed been frightened at first, but calmed herself quickly and handled the situation with composure.
He reviewed the footage on the home’s security camera and confirmed that she had not been injured.
Investigators later determined that the explosion was caused by a loose or detached gas line that had been pulled during a recent replacement of the gas cylinder, leading to a “backfire” when the stove was switched off.
After extinguishing the flames, the video shows the elderly woman trembling as she sits at the kitchen table before walking into another room to cry in front of a portrait of her late husband, who passed away two years ago.
Mr Wang said the scene left him heartbroken and deeply moved.
He explained that his grandparents had supported each other for many years and that his grandmother had continued to live alone in the countryside despite her family’s offers to bring her to the city.
Following the incident, the family’s gas system was fully overhauled, and new valves were installed.
The video, first shared on Douyin, which is what TikTok is called in China, has been viewed over 1.2 million times and received more than 19,000 likes, with netizens expressing concern, sympathy, and admiration for the elderly woman’s bravery.
