This is the heartbreaking moment a three-year-old girl in a nappy walks barefoot and crying through the streets in the middle of the night after her mother left her home alone to go to a funk dance.
Security camera footage shows the child walking the empty streets of Santo Andre, Brazil, at 1:30am on 3rd August as she sobbed and called for her mother.
She had reportedly woken up and left the house in search of her family.
Workers from electricity provider Enel, who were carrying out maintenance in the area, spotted the girl and contacted the police.
They improvised clothing for the shivering child, who was later taken in by the municipal shelter under the care of the local Child Protection Council.
The girl’s mother, 19-year-old student Mariana Souza, returned home and admitted to leaving the child alone asleep while she attended a funk dance party. She was arrested for child abandonment.
Souza was later granted provisional release during a custody hearing but was banned from entering bars and nightclubs.
She was also ordered to obey a nightly curfew between 9 pm and 6 am.
The child’s grandmother told police it was not the first time her daughter had left the child alone, and that she had already reported her to Child Protective Services.
Authorities confirmed that there had been previous complaints of neglect.
The father could not be located at the time of the report.
The Santo Andre Child Protection Council has since placed the child in institutional care while investigations continue.
