This is the moment doctors free a three-year-old girl’s hand from a meat grinder before performing an intricate operation to save it.
The incident happened in the city of Malgobek, with the child rushed to the Children’s Republican Clinical Hospital of Nazran, in the Russian Republic of Ingushetia, by ambulance on 6th August.
Video from the hospital shows medics carefully removing the girl’s left hand from the metal grinder before transferring her to the operating theatre.
An initial examination revealed an extensive, crushed lacerated wound with severe damage to bones and tendons.
Traumatologist-orthopedist Tagir Gardanov said the distal phalanx of the third finger, the fourth metacarpal bone, the extensor tendon of the fourth finger and the flexor tendon of the first finger were all injured.
The prognosis was extremely poor, with a real threat of amputation.
Surgeons removed the hand from the device, performed tendon reconstruction, and fixed the broken bones with surgical pins.
After emergency surgery, the girl was moved to a ward, she is conscious and her injured hand has been saved.
