This is the heartwarming transformation of a Doberman rescued from the brink of death at a farm, where starving dogs fed on the corpses of others, now living a pampered life with a loving family.

The dog, named Bono, was one of seven animals found emaciated and neglected on a farm in Quatro Barras, Brazil, in April 2024.

Police said the animals were owned by Jose Lailton da Silva Rocha, a businessman and pet shop owner, who was sentenced on 1st August to over 14 years in prison after being found guilty of animal mistreatment.

Bono was adopted by Jessica Tamara Alves Pina, who described how the dog arrived at her home weak, frightened, and mistrustful after being deprived of food and water.

Photos taken at the time of the rescue show the Doberman and several Italian Greyhounds emaciated and surrounded by poor hygiene conditions, with police also discovering dead dogs on the property.

Jessica said: "He was very scared, didn't trust people, even feeding him was difficult. It was a job that required a lot of love and affection.

"But today, he's doing great, he's recovered, he's happy, he walks. And Bono certainly showed me that new beginnings are possible."

Video and photos show Bono now enjoying beach trips and relaxing in comfort at his new home.

The rescue operation was carried out by local police with support from the animal welfare NGO SOS 4 Patas. The dogs were treated, vaccinated, and neutered before being put up for adoption.

Mariane Mazzon, director of the institute, said: “We rescue them, carry out all the treatment, and put them all up for adoption.

"Today, we have 551 animals [dogs, cats, large animals, birds] and the institute survives solely on donations."

At the time of the rescue, Rocha was arrested in the act and later held in preventive custody.

He was convicted based on evidence that included testimony and signs the animals had been left to feed on the corpse of another dog.

Chief of Police Guilherme Dias said: "This is one of the longest sentences we’ve ever seen in animal cruelty cases.

"The high sentence is the result of an investigation that revealed a complex, well-structured practice of cruelty."

In a statement, the defence team for Rocha said it intends to appeal, claiming the facts presented in court "do not correspond to the truth" and that it will "prove the defendant’s innocence."
