A man who had been away from home for three months returned to find eight large watermelons growing in the cracks of the concrete floor in his yard and at first thought someone had secretly been using it as a garden.

Video footage from 5th August shows the man walking into his yard in Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province, China, and panning the camera over the watermelons lying on the ground.

Some of the fruit are large and round, while others are slightly smaller but still substantial in size.

Mr Chi said the largest watermelon weighed 10 kilogrammes (22 lbs), while the smallest weighed about five kilos (11 lbs).

He said they had not been planted on purpose and might have grown from seeds casually spat out while eating watermelons last year.

He later heard from a neighbour that his mother had been in the house eating watermelons and had left the remains on the ground, where heavy flooding had probably washed them into the cracks in the cement.

He added that the watermelons were naturally ripe, very sweet, and full of water, although the skin was a little thick.

Villagers came to see the unexpected crop, and Mr Chi cut one open on the spot for everyone to taste.
