A 10-year-old boy died after breathing in coffee beans when he fell into a drying silo while playing with his younger brother.
The accident happened in the rural community of Guaripu in Campos Gerais, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, on 7th August.
According to police, the child, identified as Matheus Lima Brito, had been playing with his seven-year-old brother on the family property when he fell into the 10-foot-high reservoir used for drying coffee beans.
The parents told officers they heard the boys’ screams and ran to the scene.
The mother tried to pull Matheus out by his arms but could not free him.
His father then managed to pull him out, already unconscious, and began CPR while rushing him to the hospital.
On the way, the family encountered a Mobile Emergency Care Service team who took over resuscitation attempts.
Medical staff said the boy had aspirated coffee grounds, which blocked his airway.
He was pronounced dead in hospital despite efforts to revive him.
The parents, who have not been named, said their children often played in the coffee production area where machinery and drying silos are located.
Civil Police forensic experts examined the site and collected materials to assist in the investigation.
The boy’s body was laid out at the Campos Gerais Municipal Funeral Home and buried on 8th August.
