A daredevil paraglider has plunged 1,600 feet to her death after taking off from a mountain summit when powerful winds blew her off course and sent her crashing into a cliff.
The fatal accident happened on the morning of Friday, 8th August, on Ortler mountain in the Italian Alps, which rises to nearly 4,000 metres (1,300 feet).
The victim, 29-year-old Isabel Kofler, had reached the summit at dawn with three friends intending to paraglide down to the valley.
According to initial reports, she launched first from the top of the mountain but immediately lost altitude.
A powerful downdraft caused her to slam into the snow-covered rocks, and she continued tumbling between 1,300 and 1,600 feet down the cliff face.
The alarm was raised immediately by a mountain guide who witnessed the accident.
Rescue services scrambled to the scene, including the Sulden Alpine Rescue team, the Pelikan 1 air rescue helicopter, and the Guardia di Finanza’s Alpine unit.
Paramedics and mountain rescuers were lowered to the scene by winch but could only confirm she had died instantly from the violent impact.
The recovery operation lasted about two hours, concluding around 9am, amid a high risk of falling rocks.
Authorities have opened an investigation to determine the precise dynamics of the accident.
Isabel was a member of the Arcobaleno Fly club and a certified paraglider. She was well known in her community and active in local sports.
