Cops who had a tipoff that a boat might be smuggling live animals in the Amazon were astonished when they discovered a total of four tonnes of turtles as well as hundreds of turtle eggs stacked on top of each other in the vessel.
The arrest of the young man who had been illegally hunting the turtles took place in Canutama, a municipality in the Brazilian state of Amazonas, on Monday, 25th August.
Footage released by Amazonas Civil Police shows piles of turtles crammed together inside the seized boat.
According to delegate Armando Diadosk Junior, from the 62nd Interactive Police Station (DIP) in Canutama, the investigation began when police received reports that a boat was transporting turtles captured illegally.
Officers from the Civil and Military Police located the vessel near the Belo Monte district in the rural area of Canutama.
Inside, they found approximately 254 live turtles, one dead turtle and around a thousand turtle eggs.
The boat was estimated to be carrying approximately four tonnes of reptiles.
After the seizure, the live turtles were returned to their natural habitat and released back into the river.
The 24-year-old man was arrested in Belo Monte and taken to the 62nd DIP for proceedings.
He will be charged with the environmental crime of professional illegal hunting and will remain at the disposal of the Judiciary.
