A 22-year-old mother has pleaded guilty to causing the death of her newborn baby girl after the infant was allegedly thrown from the 10th floor of a flat.
The case is being heard in Johor Bahru, the capital city of Johor state in southern Malaysia, near the border with Singapore.
Nuran Batrisya Jamaludin entered the plea after the charge was read before Sessions Court Judge Mohd Zamir Suhaimee on 3rd June.
She was accused of causing the baby’s death by inflicting bodily injuries likely to cause death.
The offence was allegedly committed at the car park of Block Rajawali at the PPR Melana Indah Phase 2 housing complex in Taman Sutera Utama between 11am and 2.30pm on 20th May.
Police had previously said a woman was arrested after allegedly throwing her newborn daughter from the 10th floor of a flat.
Johor acting police chief Deputy Commissioner Hoo Chuan Huat said earlier: “Investigations showed that the newborn baby was still alive when she was allegedly thrown from the 10th floor, resulting in her death.”
Police said the baby girl’s body was found in the parking area of the flat after officers received a report at about 2.40pm.
Nuran, who is unmarried, was later arrested at Sultanah Aminah Hospital at around noon the following day.
Police said she had no previous criminal record and that statements had already been taken from several witnesses.
Deputy public prosecutor R. Nevina objected to bail during the court hearing.
Nuran asked the court to release her on bail, saying she needed to care for the dead baby’s surviving twin and fulfil family responsibilities.
The court granted bail of MYR 20,000 (GBP 3,740), with two sureties.
Judge Mohd Zamir also ordered Nuran to surrender her passport, report to the nearest police station once a month and not interfere with witnesses.
The charge was brought under Section 304(a) of the Penal Code for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
The offence carries a maximum jail term of 30 years and a fine upon conviction.
The court fixed 3rd July for mention, document submission and sentencing.
