This is the moment lava fountains erupt from a volcano during a record-breaking summit eruption that sent magma shooting up 650 feet into the air.

The footage was obtained from the US Geological Survey (USGS) and shows the eruption at Kilauea, in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, in the US state of Hawaii, on 1st June.

The US Geological Survey Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said: "Episode 48 of the Kilauea summit eruption in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park stopped at 1:37 pm HST June 1 after 9 hours of lava fountaining.

"This eruption has now surpassed the number of fountaining episodes in the opening years of the Puu Oo eruption from 1983-1986 (47), setting a new record number of fountaining episodes in any one Kilauea eruption."

The episode began at 4:40 am local time, according to the USGS and the northern vent threw lava as high as 200 metres (650 feet), a new record, while the southern vent, which had overflowed around 95 times in the preceding days, did not fountain.

An estimated 5.6 million cubic metres (7.3 million cubic yards) of lava spread across the Halemaumau crater floor.

The eruptive plume climbed to roughly 7,300 metres (24,000 feet) above sea level, carrying ash and tephra to the north and east.

The National Weather Service issued a warning for ashfall pertaining to downwind areas, including Volcano village, Mauna Loa Estates and Ohia Estates.

The USGS said summit inflation since the episode suggests a 49th fountaining episode is possible, which could set another record.
