This is the moment a woman plunges inside a manhole as the cover gives way beneath her feet and strikes her as it shifts.
The incident took place in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, in the Maracana neighbourhood in the north zone of the city, an area close to major residential streets and a local school, on 31st May.
The 32-year-old, named as Fabiana Rosa, had just got off a motorbike taxi when she stepped onto the pavement and walked over the manhole cover.
Video shows her dropping straight into the underground drainage system as the metal cover collapses beneath her.
The motorcyclist who had dropped her off immediately runs back to the scene after seeing her fall, before nearby residents rushed to help.
Emergency services were called and firefighters pulled her from the manhole before taking her to the Hospital Federal do Andaraí for treatment of moderate injuries.
Fabiana later told local media she believed she was going to die during the fall, saying water inside the chamber reached her chest.
“I thought I was going to die, because the water was hitting my chest and the hole was very deep,” she said.
She also said she was struck by the metal cover as it shifted during the collapse and suffered injuries across her body.
According to reports, two men were recorded removing the manhole cover shortly after 2am the previous night before attempting to reposition it without securing it properly.
Authorities believe the structure may have been left unstable following the men's actions which they described as a suspected attempted theft of metal from the site.
The Subprefecture of Tijuca said teams were sent to the location after the incident and confirmed that two manhole covers had been found displaced in the area.
Officials said the covers were reinstalled and additional checks were ordered to secure the site and prevent further incidents.
Police from the 6th BPM (Tijuca) were also called and the case is being investigated to determine how the manhole became unsafe.
