This video shows the dramatic fight for survival of a former mayor after being swept over a waterfall with the undertow dragging him back and pinning him underwater for 10 minutes.
The incident took place on the Paraiba do Meio River in Quebrangulo, in the Brazilian state Alagoas, on Tuesday, 5th August.
Footage shows Marcelo Lima, 65, former mayor of Quebrangulo, kayaking with a man accompanying him in a two-person vessel.
The pair appear relaxed as they paddle downstream, apparently unaware of the approaching drop.
Seconds later, the kayak is swept over a small waterfall and into the swirling water below.
Lima loses his paddle and falls into the river. He tries to stay with the vessel but is dragged backwards by the undertow and disappears beneath the surface.
Witnesses said he remained underwater for around 10 minutes before being pulled from the river by bystanders.
He was taken to a local hospital, where his death was confirmed.
Separate footage filmed shortly after the accident shows the second man still on the kayak, attempting to maintain balance as the current pulls the vessel.
A local resident is seen throwing a rope in an effort to help. It had been raining heavily at the time, increasing the river’s strength.
Lima had reportedly recently purchased the kayak and was taking it out on the river when the accident happened.
He served six terms as mayor and was also president of the Alagoas Agricultural Defence and Inspection Agency.
His son, former state representative Davi Maia, confirmed his death on social media.
The wake was scheduled to take place on Wednesday, 6th August, at the former City Hall in Quebrangulo.
