A 47-year-old suspect is accused of stabbing and shooting the mother of his four children before burying her under grass cuttings in the garden.
The killing happened on Easter Sunday, 5th April, in Sooss, a small wine-growing village in the Baden district of Lower Austria, south of Vienna.
The unnamed suspect, from a Kosovo family who had obtained an Austrian passport, is accused of attacking his estranged wife, Zoja Oroshi, 38, at the home where the family had previously lived together before separating in 2019.
He had reportedly been unable to accept that they were separated, which investigators believe was the motive for the attack.
Authorities say the woman supermarket employee suffered multiple injuries to her head and upper body, including stab wounds believed to have been inflicted with a screwdriver and gunshot wounds from a 9mm pistol.
Prosecutors confirmed that both a screwdriver and a firearm were seized and that a post-mortem examination has been ordered.
Authorities believe the suspect moved the body from inside the house into the garden, where it was covered with grass cuttings.
When the couple’s 13-year-old son returned home, the suspect allegedly claimed that an unknown attacker had killed his mother.
Police were alerted shortly afterwards, reportedly by the child together with his father.
Officers discovered Zoja’s body buried in the garden of the property.
The suspect later admitted moving the body outside, claiming he wanted to spare the children from seeing their mother dead inside the house.
He is currently in custody in Wiener Neustadt and has given limited statements, with further questioning scheduled.
Investigators are still working to establish the exact sequence of events and motive, with family disputes reported as a possible factor.
The couple shared four children, believed to be between 11 and 15 years old.
