A speeding Thar SUV knocked a local woman flying into a roadside ditch before crashing through a bridge railing and plunging into the water on top of her.
The horror crash happened near a petrol station in the Rohtas district, in the Indian state of Bihar, on Sunday, 3rd August.
It was captured on CCTV footage which shows the vehicle's wheels screeching as it mows down the woman and three other men seen by the railing.
The woman, identified as Babita Devi, believed to be around 40 years old, died at the scene, while the three injured men were named as Salim Mansoori, Salimuddin also known as Baul, and Saif Mansoori.
Footage of the incident shows the Thar SUV losing control at high speed, striking Babita who was walking, and then hitting the three men before flipping into a roadside ditch, taking the victims with it.
Thar refers to the Mahindra Thar, an off-road SUV made by Indian automaker Mahindra & Mahindra, inspired by classic Jeep styling popular in India for its rugged design and off-road capabilities.
Local residents rushed to the scene but tensions ran high and the angry crowd prevented police from removing the woman’s body. They also blocked the nearby national highway in protest.
According to police, three people had been inside the Thar when it crashed. The driver fled the scene but officers later arrested the vehicle’s owner, whose relative was reportedly attacked at the scene and suffered a serious head injury.
Two men identified as Rintu Singh and Anshu Kumar Pandey were also arrested after being questioned by police, who said they were continuing the search for the missing driver.
