This footage shows bathers standing on a forbidden beach just feet away from where three people died after a sea mine exploded while they were swimming in Ukraine’s Odessa region.

The blast happened at around 11:30am on 10th August, between the villages of Karolino-Bugaz and Zatoka, according to Ukrainian media.

Video from the scene shows beachgoers watching from a distance as emergency responders in protective gear inspect the beach, placing markers in the sand and cordoning off the area.

Local media reported that the mine detonated in the water about 50 metres from the shore.

Witnesses said an 83-year-old man had just stepped into the sea when the first explosion occurred, throwing his body into the air.

A second explosion followed moments later.

Police confirmed that three people were killed in total.

Officials from the Odessa Regional Military Administration reminded the public that beaches in Zatoka are not included in the list of officially open recreation areas and that it is strictly forbidden to visit them.

Authorities warned that ignoring these rules can be fatal, citing a similar incident on 7th June in Zatoka when two people died after stepping on a mine.

Since 2022, drifting sea mines have been found in the Black Sea from the Romanian to the Turkish coast, posing a continuing danger to shipping and swimmers.
