A tourist visiting a popular Tibetan lake filmed what appeared to be a Tibetan mastiff used for paid photo opportunities but on closer inspection turned out to be several Labradors wearing thick neck scarves.
The footage was filmed by a woman surnamed Zhang on 23rd July at Yamdrok Lake, a well-known scenic spot in Tibet.
In the video at least two Labradors are seen sitting side by side on a raised platform while wearing large scarves around their necks with a man standing nearby who appears to be their handler and who reacts nervously when he realises he is being filmed.
He is seen tugging on one of the dog’s leashes and using his hand to try to obscure the scarf and neck area.
The video has sparked debate online after some tourists were apparently led to believe they were paying to pose with a Tibetan mastiff, a breed traditionally associated with the region.
The Tibetan mastiff is a large and powerful breed native to Tibet that was historically used as a guard dog for livestock and property and is known for its thick double coat and imposing appearance.
It has become a symbol of regional pride and has fetched prices of up to CNY 2 million (GBP 207,000) at the peak of its popularity.
