A quick-thinking 14-year-old boy saved his cousin from choking by performing the Heimlich manoeuvre at their family home.
The drama happened in the Guararapes neighbourhood of Fortaleza, Brazil, on 7th August and was captured by a security camera in the kitchen.
Footage shows 13-year-old Igor Vasconcelos stumbling in, coughing heavily and struggling to breathe after choking on a mouthful of milk, chocolate and crunchy flakes.
His aunt, Joana, is seen trying to help by raising his arms before telling her 14-year-old son Silas to run to a neighbour for help.
Instead, Silas quickly comes back, wraps his arms around Igor from behind and begins performing the Heimlich manoeuvre.
After several sharp thrusts to the abdomen, Igor spits out some of the liquid and starts breathing more easily.
Silas later told relatives he had learned the move from his older brother Eduardo, who had picked it up after seeing a TV programme and showing Silas how it was done.
Igor’s mother, Lione Vasconcelos, said: "Silas loves telling stories and the two of them are so close they’re like brothers, so at first he thought Igor was just messing around.
"But when he saw it was real, he told me his mum told him to go to the neighbour’s. He said that when he got to the door, he thought, if I go and come back, Igor might already be dead because mum wouldn’t know how to do what I can.
“It might not have been textbook perfect, but it was what saved my son.”
Lione said the terrifying video had gone around the family within hours.
She added: "It was horrible. All I could do was cry. We all realised how quickly it could have been over. One second everything is fine and in the blink of an eye it changes."
Igor was later taken to hospital with a sore throat and chest, where doctors prescribed painkillers.
Lione said they decided to share the footage to show how knowing the Heimlich manoeuvre could save lives, not just for children, but for teenagers and adults too.
