An alleged rapist who snatched a policeman's gun and shot him dead before holding a mother and daughter hostage in a 17-hour standoff has been arrested.
The killing happened at the Laranjal do Jari Police Station in southern Amapa, Brazil, on Friday, 22nd August.
According to investigators, the suspect, identified as 28-year-old Lucas de Souza Nonato, was being presented at the station when he seized the officer's weapon and opened fire.
Video shared on social media shows Nonato later holding a woman and her 10-year-old daughter hostage inside a residence after fleeing the scene.
During this time, Nonato reportedly made a live broadcast saying the hostages were safe, asked to speak with his family, and demanded a bulletproof vest before surrender.
The hostages were released on Saturday morning after 17 hours in captivity.
The suspect then gave himself up to security forces and was taken into custody.
Police confirmed Nonato was being arrested for crimes including rape of a vulnerable person and robbery when he shot officer Mayson Viana de Freitas.
Mayson, 38, was remembered by colleagues as a dedicated professional.
He was awaiting the birth of his first child with his pregnant fiancee, who had recently announced they were expecting a boy.
On social media, the couple had shared memories of their travels and the moment they discovered the baby's gender.
Family members posted tributes online.
His father-in-law wrote: "You were someone who always guided yourself by good principles, who never refused to help others. It will be difficult for us to come to terms with your absence. Rest in peace."
The Amapa State Secretariat for Public Security confirmed the officer died of gunshot injuries sustained during the prisoner presentation and said it is monitoring the case.
Mayson's body was removed by the Scientific Police and his wake is expected to take place this weekend at a location chosen by the family.
