A mountain guide and a woman tourist have been found dead after reportedly falling from an ice-covered rock above a glacier during a mountainous trekking excursion.
The incident occurred in the Vinciguerra Glacier area, around seven kilometres from the city of Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, in one of the most demanding trekking routes in the region, on Monday, 1st June.
The victims were identified as Emiliano Feidas, a local mountain guide and musician, and Abril Melina Marino Pereira, a 25-year-old tourist from Uruguay.
Search operations were launched during the night after Feidas’ mother reported that the pair had failed to return from the excursion.
Rescue teams from the Commission of Auxiliary Services in Ushuaia began working overnight as conditions in the area deteriorated.
Emiliano Feidas, believed to be around 40 years old, was a well-known figure in the Tierra del Fuego mountaineering community.
He regularly shared his expeditions online, documenting activities such as trekking and splitboarding in the Patagonian mountains.
Outside of guiding, he also performed as a drummer in a rock band called Boyska.
Friends and colleagues described him as deeply involved in outdoor sports and local cultural life.
Abril Melina Marino Pereira, originally from Maldonado, Uruguay, had been travelling in Argentina on holiday at the time.
She had recently visited Buenos Aires before continuing her trip to the southern region of the country.
According to local reports, she worked as a waitress at a restaurant inside a hotel in Punta del Este.
The Vinciguerra Glacier is known for its difficult terrain, with steep climbs, icy sections, and unstable ground conditions.
Authorities stated that the route requires strong physical preparation and appropriate equipment due to rapidly changing weather.
Cristian Alvarez, director of Civil Defence in Ushuaia, said the search was activated immediately after the missing persons report was filed.
He confirmed that rescue teams worked through the night and resumed operations early the following morning.
Both bodies were later located in the upper section of the glacier in the early hours of 2nd June by members of the rescue commission.
Initial indications suggested the pair may have suffered a fall along the ice and steep rock.
Recovery efforts were complicated by weather conditions and limited access to the remote mountainous area.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding their deaths is ongoing.
