This is the moment a massive avalanche plunges down a mountainside and engulfs a ski lodge in a huge cloud of snow and ice.
The incident happened at the Franz-Senn-Hütte in the Stubai Valley in the Stubai Alps, Tyrol, Austria, on 21 February.
Video recorded by several cameras shows a vast wall of snow racing down the slope for around 400 metres before slamming into the area around the mountain hut, swallowing the building in a dense cloud of powder.
The avalanche reportedly broke loose roughly 500 vertical metres above the lodge and swept across the access route as it descended.
Despite the force of the avalanche, no one was injured. The lodge withstood the impact, although its technical systems were temporarily affected.
Hut manager Thomas Fankhauser said he had sent all guests down into the valley days earlier due to the critical weather situation and unstable snowpack, and had cancelled reservations as a precaution. He told local media that the avalanche was known in the area and that there had been no direct danger to the hut itself.
Following the incident, the lodge’s own power plant failed. Reports said avalanches further back in the valley may have blocked the Alpeiner Bach stream or obstructed the water intake supplying the system.
The Tyrol Avalanche Warning Service said avalanche danger level 4 had been issued in many areas following heavy snowfall and strong winds.
Authorities warned of acute danger away from secured pistes and urged extreme caution in open terrain.
