Youth Lights Cardboard Box On Fire Before Blaze Spreads To Parked Car

This is the moment three youths make their way down a street as one of them sparks a lighter and sets a cardboard box alight before the box catches fire and the flames spread to a parked car.

The footage was obtained from a CCTV camera in the city of Batman, in the south-eastern Turkish province of Batman, and shows the incident on 30th May.

The incident unfolded around midday in the city's Kultur neighbourhood, on a busy street where the fire was noticed early and tackled without delay.

The video shows the three youths making their way down the street when one of them appears to pull out a lighter and set a cardboard box lying in front of a parked car on fire.

Minutes later the box can be seen ablaze as the fire quickly spreads to the front of the car, setting its number plate on fire and scorching its bumper and part of its bonnet black.

Adults can then be seen rushing over with water and putting out the burning car.

Local residents and shopkeepers reportedly rushed to help without waiting for fire crews, filling plastic bottles with water to keep the flames from reaching the engine.

A resident who spotted the commotion from a window reportedly joined the effort by feeding a hose down from an upper floor, which delivered a heavier and more effective flow onto the flames.

The car was left with material damage, but the blaze was put out completely thanks to the combined efforts of those who happened to be passing or living nearby.

It is unclear if the police, who have launched an investigation into the incident, have identified the youths involved.
