This is the moment a couple fishing on a river in Brazil reeled in their catch only to find a bare carcass after it had been devoured by piranhas before they could bring it to the boat

The attack happened on 24th July on Lago Verde in Lagoa da Confusao, in the western part of the Brazilian state of Tocantins, and the footage was later shared on 31st July.

In the video recorded by the couple, the fish can be seen struggling on the line before it is pulled from the water revealing that only the skeleton, part of the head, and the gills are left.

Fisherwoman Aurileia Gomes de Andrade dos Santos said: “We were searching for peacock bass, but we caught a surubim instead. The piranhas attacked long before they reached the boat. It was a terrifying sight."

She and her husband, Marino Neto Chaves dos Santos, have been sport fishing for over 18 years but said they had never seen anything like this before.

Marino added: “The piranhas already devoured it completely. It's like that in a river with piranhas. You catch a fish and the piranhas eat it right away. Look what's left of the surubim.”

According to the couple, it took less than a minute from the moment the fish was hooked to the time it was pulled from the water. The steel cable to which the artificial bait was attached was also damaged.

They said the fish was still moving when it was pulled in and that its gills continued to move for some time after the remains were taken out of the water.

A similar case was recorded in 2023 when a group of friends filmed an alligator being devoured from the inside out by a school of piranhas in the Javaes River, also in western Tocantins.

Biologist Aluisio Vasconcelos at the time said the species are often referred to as the “trash cans” of the rivers because they feed on dead animals and help to clean the water.
