This is the moment a driver chases a terrified elk and a huge bear for more than a kilometre down a busy road.
Video footage shows the elk running ahead of the bear as both animals race along the tarmac in Kamchatka, Russia, while a car follows directly behind filming the scene.
The clip, shared online on 18ht August, captures the vehicle keeping close to the pair as they sprint side by side before disappearing further along the road.
Eyewitnesses recorded the unusual encounter while following in the car.
Local media reported that the driver pursued the animals for more than a kilometre before the chase ended.
The footage has raised concerns about endangering protected wildlife. Elk and Kamchatka brown bears are covered by Russian federal law, which prohibits disturbing or chasing animals without authorisation.
Conservationists warn that pursuing large mammals with a vehicle can cause exhaustion or stress, and human interference adds to pressures already faced by the region’s bear population.
The chase has also been described as a road safety risk. Keeping close to two wild animals at speed on a public road could have caused a collision and falls under reckless driving offences in Russian traffic law.
Environmental groups have previously criticised similar pursuits in Kamchatka, saying they harass animals and increase the risk of human–wildlife conflict.
