This is the moment an inmate escapes a hospital after shooting dead a prison officer and walking out dressed in the victim’s uniform.
The incident took place at Hospital Luxemburgo in Belo Horizonte, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, in the early hours of Sunday, 3rd August.
Surveillance video shows the suspect leaving the hospital’s entrance wearing the uniform of the officer who had been escorting him.
The inmate, identified as Shaylon Cristian Ferreira Moreira, 24, had been receiving medical care since 27th July and asked to use the bathroom before launching a violent attack on officer Euler Oliveira Pereira Rocha, 42, during which he stole the officer’s weapon and shot him in the back of the head and chest.
Medical staff attempted resuscitation but were unable to save the victim, who died at the scene.
A member of the nursing staff told investigators she heard shouting followed by two loud bangs and then saw the suspect washing blood from his hands before walking out in the officer’s uniform.
Outside the hospital, the suspect approached a local woman, claimed his mother was ill and that he had no phone, and asked her to order a ride-hailing car.
Believing he was a police officer, she used the app to summon a vehicle.
However, he was caught and taken away by police when they approached the vehicle and spotted him trying to hide in the back seat.
The driver later said that he was instructed by the passenger not to stop the car, but complied when approached by officers.
The suspect was found still wearing the uniform and in possession of a bag belonging to the murdered officer. Inside were three pistols with live bullet rounds.
Police said the suspect had been in the prison system since 2018, facing charges including drug trafficking, theft, illegal firearm possession and homicide.
He was most recently convicted in March 2025 for a fatal stabbing that occurred in October the previous year.
Union officials have criticised the lack of adequate safety during hospital escorts and said such duties are normally handled by two officers.
The State Secretariat of Justice and Public Security (SEJUSP) confirmed an internal investigation is underway.
