A man who had an affair with his partner's daughter and made her pregnant has been arrested for murdering the woman’s 16-year-old daughter after both of the older women broke things off.
Teenager Fernanda Tiemi dos Santos Ferreira was discovered dead by her mother inside her home in Mogi das Cruzes, Sao Paulo state, Brazil, on 20th August.
The body was on the bed in the bedroom and had several stab wounds, including on the left side of the neck.
Police named the prime suspect as 60-year-old Carlos Ovidio Batista, whose arrest was confirmed on 26th August.
Batista had dated Fernanda’s mother for five years. After that, he allegedly became involved with the victim's sister, a 23-year-old woman who is eight months pregnant with his child and has a restraining order against him.
According to the sister, the day before the crime Batista went to the her house asking her to drop the restraining order, claiming he wanted to register the child.
The request was denied, and he left. On another occasion, she said, he had stated that if he did not receive support to live in the same house, a "tragedy" would happen.
Witnesses reported seeing his car in front of the house on the day Fernanda died.
Police Chief Estevao Castro said: "So far, everything suggests that [the motivation] would be a mix of jealousy and revenge.
"He is jealous of the women who no longer want anything to do with him.
"He is angry with the victim's sister who requested a protection order against him for the threats."
Police said Fernanda, who was herself a mother, was home alone at the time with her 15-month-old daughter inside the house.
Investigators said there were no signs of forced entry at the crime scene, which was examined by forensic specialists before Fernanda was later buried in Mogi das Cruzes.
The investigation is ongoing.
