This shocking footage shows the moment a knife-wielding shoplifter tried to snatch a baby from its mother’s arms before being wrestled to the ground and beaten by a group of men.

The incident happened in Butterworth, in the state of Penang, Malaysia, at around 12:45pm on 9th August.

Police said the man, a Vietnamese national in his 30s, had been spotted trying to leave the supermarket without paying for several weighed seafood items.

When the supermarket supervisor tried to stop him, he broke free from staff and security guards.

Video from the scene shows the man being tackled by several bystanders inside the store.

He manages to slip from their grasp and runs down an aisle towards a woman holding her 11-month-old son.

The suspect grabs the crying child by his shirt as the mother clings desperately to the boy’s arms.

Several men rush in, striking the suspect repeatedly as he refuses to let go of the baby.

The child is finally pulled free and the suspect is dragged to the floor in the struggle.

Kicks and punches rain down on him as he lies pinned on the ground, surrounded by supermarket goods that have spilled from nearby shelves during the fight.

He was held there until police arrived and took him into custody.

The man is facing charges of theft, voluntarily causing hurt with a weapon, and criminal intimidation.

Police confirmed the child was not seriously injured.
