A wealthy businessman who lied about graduating from Harvard on his resume is facing life in prison after he shot dead a binman using his cop wife's gun during a row about the rubbish truck blocking the road.
The killing happened on 11th August in Belo Horizonte, the capital of Minas Gerais state, Brazil.
Police said 44-year-old garbage collector Laudemir de Souza Fernandes was working with colleagues when businessman Rene da Silva Nogueira Junior drove up in a grey BYD electric car and demanded the truck move to let him pass.
The female truck driver told police there was enough space for the car to pass but said the businessman threatened her, telling her: "If you bump into my car, I'll shoot you in the face."
Colleagues urged him to calm down, but he refused and allegedly pulled out a gun and fired.
One of the bullets struck Laudemir, who was rushed to hospital in a police vehicle but died from his injuries.
The gun used in the shooting, a .380 calibre pistol, belonged to Nogueira Junior’s wife, police chief Ana Paula Lamego Balbino Nogueira, according to the police report.
Two guns were seized from the couple’s home in Nova Lima, including the weapon allegedly used in the killing.
Police arrested Nogueira Junior at a gym in later that day.
In a statement to Minas Gerais Civil Police, he denied being at the scene and claimed he had gone to work before returning home, walking his dogs, and going to the gym.
Investigators said his account contained "choppy" timelines and was inconsistent with witness statements.
A court has ordered his detention to be converted from flagrant to preventive arrest, meaning he will remain in custody indefinitely while the investigation continues.
According to investigators, Nogueira Junior has a previous criminal record for domestic violence and manslaughter.
During the custody hearing, judge Leonardo Damasceno described him as a "violent" and "unbalanced" individual.
He stated: "Apparently, he went to the gym... I mean, he commits a crime and goes to train at a gym?"
It has also emerged that Nogueira Junior had a faked LinkedIn resume where he claimed he had graduated from Harvard Business School.
The prestigious university denied he was ever a student there, and said in a 14th August statement: "We have no record of Rene da Silva Nogueira Junior having attended or received a diploma from Harvard Business School."
The Pontifical Catholic University (PUC) of Rio de Janeiro, which Nogueira Junior claimed had awarded him an MBA, also denied that he ever attended.
City officials said Laudemir worked through a third-party cleaning company and that his family is receiving support.
The investigation is ongoing.
