Firefighters Rescue Baby Stork Tangled In Fishing Line In Chimney Nest 15 Metres Up

This is the moment a young stork with a fishing line tangled around its neck and right leg is lifted to safety from a nest atop a chimney by rescuers working from a raised platform.

The footage was obtained from the Fire and Rescue Service of the Pardubice Region in the district of Hylvaty, on the edge of the town of Usti nad Orlici, in the Czech region of Pardubice, and shows the incident on 1st June.

The chick had become so badly entangled that it could not move, and the line around its neck threatened to tighten and choke it, according to the City of Usti nad Orlici.

Firefighters from the Usti nad Orlici station raised an aerial platform to the nest, removed the line and checked on the bird's three siblings before carrying it down for treatment.

The nest, home to four chicks and one of their parents, sits atop a chimney around 17 metres (56 feet) high, where storks have bred for years.

A worker watching the family on a live webcam run by a local internet provider noticed something was wrong and alerted the rescue station.

Milan Oppa, of the Pasicka Rescue Station, arrived around an hour and 20 minutes later, though he could not say if the chick would survive.

Oppa said: "It was literally pinned to the nest, so it could not straighten up or move.

"It had probably been there like that for quite a while.

"It is already with us in intensive care."

White storks (Ciconia ciconia) are a protected species in the Czech Republic.
