This is the moment an 18-year-old hitman is captured by police following a month-long international manhunt after he had been mistakenly released from jail despite being accused of murder.
The arrest of Alberto Carlos Mejia Hernandez, one of the most wanted members of the Tren de Aragua gang, took place in Barrancabermeja, Colombia, on Saturday, 16th August, following the issuance of an Interpol red notice.
Authorities said the teenage fugitive had dyed his hair blonde to mislead investigators, but a distinctive tattoo on his arm confirmed his identity.
Mejia Hernandez had been on the run since July after being mistakenly released from prison in Chile.
On 9th July, the Eighth Guarantee Court in Santiago had ordered his pretrial detention, but the following day he was freed after contradictory documents were issued by the court and the Chilean prison service.
He was accused of involvement in the killing of businessman and alleged loan shark Jose Felipe Reyes Ossa, nicknamed the 'King of Meiggs,' who was shot dead on 19th June.
Chilean prosecutors are investigating whether falsified documents or manipulation of judicial computer systems allowed Mejia Hernandez to walk free and escape to Colombia.
Mejia Hernandez is now being held in custody by Colombian authorities and awaiting extradition to Chile.
The Tren de Aragua gang originated in Venezuelan prisons and has spread to countries including Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, and Chile, where its members are accused of crimes including drug trafficking, extortion, kidnapping, and homicide.
