This is the moment a tiger cub jumps a fence into a hyena’s enclosure at a Chinese zoo and is caught on camera in a dramatic scrap that saw the tables turn midway through the fight.
The incident happened at Shendiaoshan Wildlife World in Xixiakou, Weihai, Shandong Province, and the video was shared on Douyin - the Chinese version of TikTok on 9th August.
The footage filmed by a visitor shows the cub easily getting the better of the hyena at first, sinking its teeth into the animal’s neck in a series of fast, vicious bites as the hyena tries to dodge away.
The two circle each other, with the tiger cub snapping repeatedly as the hyena ducks and weaves to escape.
But in a twist later in the footage, the hyena scores a solid bite of its own, catching the tiger and forcing it to break off the attack.
Suddenly, the cub keeps its distance, its earlier aggression replaced by caution as the hyena edges forward, apparently trying to drive the young big cat back over the fence.
Zoo staff said in a statement on 10th August that both animals are young, with little real attack power and that they will now be kept properly separated so they cannot enter each other’s enclosures again.
In the wild, a tiger and a hyena would never meet — their natural ranges are thousands of miles apart, with tigers native to Asia and hyenas to Africa and parts of western Asia. Even in the Ice Age, their ancestors roamed different parts of the world.
The zoo is a coastal wildlife nature reserve housing more than 4,000 animals from over 400 species.
