Drink-Driver Ploughs SUV Into Courtyard Narrowly Missing Children As They Flee To Safety

This is the shocking moment an out-of-control SUV tears into the courtyard of a five-storey block of flats as three children flee its path, driven by a man who police said was drunk.

The footage was obtained from the State Traffic Inspectorate (GAI) in the town of Asha, in the Russian oblast of Chelyabinsk, and shows the incident on 30th May.

The video shows the white Hyundai Creta speeding into the courtyard and knocking down two concrete pillars beside the building's main entrance.

It then strikes a parked car before bearing down on the youngsters, one of whom rides a bicycle while the others are on scooters.

The children drop their rides and bolt to safety, and although the driver misses them he crushes the abandoned bicycle before slamming into more parked vehicles.

The GAI said the unnamed man at the wheel was 45 and intoxicated, that the two cars left wrecked were a Mercedes and a SsangYong, and that shortly before the crash, he had let his equally drunk female companion, not named either and who had no licence, take a turn at driving.

Administrative cases were opened against the man under parts one, two and three of Article 12.8 of Russia's Code of Administrative Offences, covering drink-driving, handing control to an intoxicated person and handing it to an unlicensed driver.

The GAI said the offences carry up to 15 days of administrative detention, a fine of RUB 45,000 (GBP 471) and the loss of a driving licence for up to two years.
