This is the shocking moment an out-of-control car goes flying through the air before smashing into the upper floor of a Michelin-starred restaurant.

The footage was obtained from a CCTV camera in the town of Arco, in the Italian province of Trento, and shows the incident on 22nd May.

The video shows the building shudder as if struck by an earthquake before a cloud of debris engulfs the frame as the car hits it shortly after a Carabinieri police car drives past.

The car left the road for reasons still under investigation and hit an embankment that launched it into the air.

It then flew a further 20 to 30 metres (66 to 98 feet) right in front of the carabinieri patrol car before hitting the first floor of the building.

The engine was torn from the car and thrown onto a balcony before the vehicle fell back to rest beside an empty swimming pool.

The restaurant, owned by chef Peter Brunel, was closed for renovation and had been due to reopen in June, with tourist apartments on the upper floors also empty.

Brunel said: "Fortunately, the restaurant was closed for renovation work on the upper floors."

The 31-year-old driver, unnamed but said to be a Tunisian national, remained conscious and was airlifted to hospital in Brescia in serious condition with multiple injuries.

His mother, 55, unnamed, who was travelling with him, was also taken to hospital suffering from shock. Some reports indicated she was also seriously injured.

Debris smashed through doors and windows and reached as far as the kitchen, with the damage estimated in the hundreds of thousands of euros.

Firefighters, paramedics and police attended the scene, and a crane was needed to remove the wreckage.

Local residents and business owners said they had warned for years about the dangers of the busy road, which has no speed limits or traffic-calming measures.
