This is the moment a woman clutching her puppy in her arms is knocked to the ground and bitten on the head by another dog after it escapes through an open gate.
The incident took place in Campos dos Goytacazes, in the north of Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, on Tuesday, 14th October.
Security camera footage shows a man emerging from behind the gate, with the larger dog then running through after him and charging towards the 44-year-old woman as she walks her own pet around the neighbourhood.
She scoops her small dog into her arms to protect it, but the other animal knocks her down and attacks her.
Residents rush to her aid and manage to restrain the attacking dog before locking it back behind its gate.
Neighbours said the victim lives on the same street and regularly walks her dog there.
They told local media that the gate was left open when a resident stepped outside, allowing the animal to run into the street.
The woman was rescued by firefighters and taken to Ferreira Machado Hospital with head injuries.
According to the hospital, she remains under observation but is in a stable condition.
In a statement, the hospital said: “The patient had scalp injuries, had sutures and dressings, received a tetanus shot, received medication and is stable, under observation in the boarding ward.”
It is unclear if the larger dog has been seized by the authorities. It is also currently unclear what kind of dog it was.
