A queer protest in Germany's capital erupted into chaos when hundreds of participants shouting pro-Palestine slogans attacked police with water bottles and paint bombs.
The Internationalist Queer Pride saw 10,000 march through the streets of Berlin demanding justice for people in Gaza on Saturday afternoon, 26th July.
But the peace-promoting event instead turned violent as around 150 members of the crowd reportedly began shouting anti-Semitist slurs and calling for the death of Israeli soldiers, and eventually attacked policemen guarding the protesters.
Officers were pelted with paint bombs and plastic bottles, and some were beaten with flagpoles.
The officers had to request for backup as they struggled to subdue the unruly crowd.
In the end, 57 people were arrested and 17 officers were reportedly injured.
A police spokeswoman said: "Several arrests were made, and the protesters sometimes offered considerable resistance, so the police had to use force against these individuals."
Due to the incidents, the event had to be ended early.
Benjamin Jendro, spokesperson for the Berlin police union GDP, criticised the incident saying: "It is sad that extremists are now even abusing festival events to unleash their hatred of the police and the democratic rule of law through violent outbursts."
