A husband has been charged with attempted murder four years after his wife fell from a balcony and spent months in a coma before waking to tell police he had pushed her.
The incident happened in the Kagithane district of Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city, on 1st April 2022.
Police had initially treated the case as an apparent suicide bid after Burcak Sisman, 41, was left catastrophically injured when she fell from the balcony of the family home.
The mother-of-one spent months fighting for her life in intensive care before regaining consciousness and telling officers she had not jumped.
Instead, Burcak claimed her husband, Adem Sisman, had dragged her towards the window and shoved her from behind.
The case has now emerged four years later, after prosecutors filed an indictment charging Adem with attempted intentional killing and requested a life sentence.
Burcak reportedly said: “There was no argument between us, but Adem dragged me to the window and pushed me from behind.
“I never had suicidal thoughts.
“Before the incident I called my brother and said: ‘Save me.’
“I don’t remember why I said it.”
The mother also claimed her husband used drugs and subjected her to ongoing psychological pressure during their marriage.
A forensic report later submitted to prosecutors reportedly found injuries on the palms of Burcak’s hands consistent with someone trying to grab onto branches or nearby objects while falling.
Experts stated in the report that such injuries are more commonly associated with attempted murder cases than suicides.
Investigators also said tree branches slowed Burcak’s fall and may have saved her life, although she was left with permanent injuries.
Adem Sisman, 46, denied all accusations against him.
He claimed his wife’s family had opposed their marriage from the beginning and alleged she had been under pressure over inheritance issues.
Adem reportedly told investigators: “She got up from the table saying she heard a sound from the child, then I saw that she had fallen.”
The suspect also claimed his wife had accused him because of pressure from her relatives.
Following the investigation, prosecutors charged Adem with attempted murder and requested a life sentence.
Court proceedings in the case are expected to begin in the coming days.
