An elderly driver, who a court heard was so confused he should not have been behind the wheel when he ran over an 11-year-old girl on a bicycle, has been committed for psychiatric treatment.

The incident took place near a residential building as the 73-year-old was driving his Lada 211540 in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, on 25th June 2024.

The girl had cycled onto the road and was hit by the car, which then ran over her without the driver making any attempt to stop.

Video footage from the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate shows the girl riding slowly across the street before the Lada hits her and drives straight over her body without braking. The car comes to a gradual stop only after it has completely passed over the child, and the driver is later seen standing outside the vehicle, appearing confused and unsteady.

She was taken to hospital with serious injuries, including brain trauma, spinal and femur fractures, a heart contusion, and other wounds that left her in a coma and needing long-term care.

A psychiatric assessment found the pensioner was not fully aware of his actions and posed a risk to others. Between 2023 and 2024, he had already been fined 41 times for traffic offences.

He claimed in court that he had panicked and failed to brake, but denied running over the child. He was found guilty of causing serious injury through a traffic violation and banned from driving.

The court sentenced him to one year of restricted freedom and ordered compulsory psychiatric treatment, and he must also pay RUB 700,000 (GBP 6,575) to the girl’s parents as compensation.
