This is the moment a driver jumps from his moving car after it was struck and pushed by a massive goods train down the tracks.
The crash happened in Curitiba, Brazil on Sunday night, 24th August, at the intersections of Rua Olindo Caetani and Rua Sargento Luiz Gonzaga Martins Ribas.
Security camera footage shows the train horn sounding at 7:24pm.
Less than 20 seconds later, the car moves onto the tracks and the locomotive strikes it on the side, shoving it for about 30 metres (98 feet).
The video captures the moment the man opens the door and jumps from the moving vehicle as the train pushes it down the line.
The 30-year-old driver suffered head injuries. He was treated at Cajuru Hospital, where he is reported to be doing well.
According to his mother, who asked not to be identified, the car had stopped on the tracks before it was hit.
Emergency services from SAMU and the railway concessionaire Rumo were called to the scene.
Witnesses told local media the driver showed signs of drunkenness and left the area with the help of friends before rescuers arrived.
Traffic Police Battalion officers recorded the incident and began official procedures.
Rumo said in a statement that despite the train engineer’s immediate reaction, the weight and size of the locomotive made it impossible to prevent the collision.
The company added that trains always have the right of way under Article 212 of the Brazilian Traffic Code, and failing to stop before a crossing is considered a very serious infraction.
The Civil Police have been contacted and are yet to issue a response about the case.
