This video shows the shocking moment a Xiaomi children’s smartwatch spontaneously combusts and sends sparks flying while resting on a tabletop at a family home.

The incident involved a watch produced by Chinese consumer electronics firm Xiaomi and happened at a home in Luzhou, Sichuan Province, China, at around 7am on 28th July.

Surveillance footage shows the Mr Rabbit watch suddenly erupting in a ball of sparks before spinning in a circle on the slate table and filling the room with thick smoke while making a loud hissing sound.

Mr Han, who had placed the watch on the table the night before, said: "I usually keep it by the bed, but luckily this time it was on a table."

The smartwatch was reportedly purchased a year ago and is apparently used by one of Mr Han’s children. He said it was rarely worn and had shown no signs of malfunction before the incident.

He contacted Xiaomi’s customer service immediately, but declined to send in the device for examination, saying he did not trust a test carried out solely by the manufacturer.

A Xiaomi official confirmed the case had been logged and said: "The results will be released after identification," but did not comment further.

The watch left scorch marks on the stone surface of the table, and Mr Han said he was deeply concerned about what could have happened if the incident occurred while the device was being worn.

Xiaomi is one of the world’s largest smartphone manufacturers and a major producer of smart consumer devices, including wearables, home electronics, and Internet of Things (IoT) products.

Known for offering high-spec devices at competitive prices, the company operates in over 100 countries and has a significant presence in global markets, especially in Asia and Europe.
