This is the shocking moment a lorry smashes through a height-limit barrier on a bridge and sends the steel bar whipping round into two schoolgirls.

The footage was obtained from a CCTV camera in the town of Jiuzhou, in the Chinese autonomous region of Guangxi, on 1st June.

The video shows the two girls walking along the right-hand side of the crossing as the lorry approaches from behind shortly after 7am.

The vehicle clips the overhead height-limit frame, snapping one of the metal bars, which swings violently sideways and strikes both girls, dropping them to the ground.

One of the girls appears more badly hurt and remains lying on the road, unable to move, as shouts ring out around her.

The incident happened on the second bridge in Jiuzhou, in Lingshan County, with both girls taken to hospital straight afterwards.

The Jiuzhou town government said the pair were not seriously injured and were sent for medical checks, with one of them already back at school.

The road where it happened has since reopened to traffic, according to reports.

Officials said the matter was under investigation and that the driver involved had been taken into custody.
