A police chief has ordered a full investigation into the death of a young woman officer who was forced to work alongside her alleged rapist after her family complained that six years had passed with no new developments.
Maria Klochkova, 23, was found dead at her desk at a police station in the city of Sochi in south-western Russia's Krasnodar Krai region on 23rd November 2019.
She died one month after she was reportedly hospitalised on 6th October of the same year due to bleeding following a sexual assault allegedly committed by her colleague.
Only weeks after the assault, Maria killed herself because, according to her family's claim, she was forced to continue working alongside Alan Parastayev, the man who had allegedly raped her.
Her family said she had always wanted to be a police officer and had graduated with top marks before starting work as a detective in Sochi.
They said she also told them that she had been bullied and then raped in a violent attack by a more senior officer.
Her sister Anna said police officers went on to cover up what had happened.
She said: “My sister was not mentally ill, she did not have schizophrenia or any other mental illness, the fact is that she was forced into suicide."
She added: “She’d been raped by a cop. She was afraid of ruining her own life. But her senior officer knew about it. He even promised to help her get into another department.”
The family rejected allegations that no one else was involved because the young woman had locked herself into a room before shooting herself.
They said she was massively overworked and had no time to come to terms with what had happened.
Her sister said: “The workload was colossal both physically and mentally.”
A former classmate said she had graduated with top honours and had been a cheerful and focused young woman.
Russian media reported that Maria left an unfinished suicide note in which she blamed herself and did not accuse anyone directly.
The same reports said that colleagues, including her bosses and the operative accused by the family, were subjected to polygraph testing.
After her death, the Investigative Committee opened criminal cases on negligence and incitement to suicide.
The cases were transferred from Sochi to Krasnodar in 2020 and handled by the department for especially important cases.
Despite numerous examinations the suicide version remained the main official line and no one was charged.
Relatives continued to say Maria had been driven to suicide by her treatment at work and named individuals she said had treated her aggressively.
Six years on, the head of the Investigative Committee, Alexander Bastrykin, has ordered a fresh report on all investigative measures taken, the established circumstances, and the results.
The department said the execution of the order has been placed under control in its central office.
